Book Review : Deathless

Atau kelaut aja sekalian karena…WHATS WRONG WITH YOU GUUUUYYSSS?!!!!!! Okeh.

Kenapa gila ? haha gabungkan saja semua sifat tadi, maka hasilnya pasti gila. Kenapa maso? karena dia bersedia berserah diri menjadi objek “kesenangan”nya Marya walaupun Marya menduakannya dengan musuh bebuyutannya, Ivan. Kenapa sadist? saya rasa Koschei membuat Christian Grey dan permainannya terliat seperti anak – anak.

Kenapa pervert? Kenapa lalai ? saya bingung. Koschei terliat tidak pernah menjalankan fungsinya sebagai Tsar of Life.

Ushanka shrugged. “They didn’t tell me to comfort you.” She started walking again, towards the canteen. “Do you know what he did when you left? He stopped the Yelena mill. He pulled them all out and made them sit in a room in the Chernosvyat, all in rows like students, and he dragged Likho out from wherever she liked to slink before she died, and made her teach them. Like a skinny old black-wool-and-chalk schoolmistress. And do you know what he wanted taught? How to turn a Yelena into a Marya. He made them read that awful black book you had, and make friends with leshiyi and vintovniki and vilas, and shoot firebirds. Everything you ever did, he made them repeat, hoping one would show promise, be his star pupil. But they couldn’t stop their weaving as easy as winking, and all the while they just kept moving their hands like they were still working at the looms. Eventually, he gave up. That, quite frankly, is practically the worst thing I’ve ever heard of a husband doing, but it only goes to show what the flesh will do when it’s grieving. Better to have organdy and linen and silk, if you ask me. Silk doesn’t love; linen doesn’t mourn.”

Awww~~~ ❤ Dan dialog Koschei favoritku :

“I don’t care, Marya Morevna. Kiss him. Take him to your bed, and the vila, too, for all it matters to me. Do you understand me, wife? There need never be any rules between us. Let us be greedy together; let us hoard. Let us hit each other with birch branches and lock each other in dungeons; let us drink each other’s blood in the night and betray each other in the sun. Let us lie and lust and take hundreds of lovers; let us dance until snow melts beneath us. Let us steal and eat until we grow fat and roll in the pleasures of life, clutching each other for purchase. Only leave me my death—let me hold this one thing sacred and unmolested and secret—and I will serve you a meal of myself, served on a platter of all the world’s bounty. Only do not leave me, swear that you will never leave me, and no empress will stand higher. Forget the girls in the factory. Be selfish and cruel and think nothing of them. I am selfish. I am cruel. My mate cannot be less than I. I will have you in my hoard, Marya Morevna, my black mirror.”

Dan Marya Morevna ? Marya adalah patner yang setara dengan Koschei. Dia balas mencakar, memukul, menggigit, dan menguasai.

Marya lifted her hand and laid it on her husband’s cheek. With a blinking quickness, she drove her nails deep into his face. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that. I have worn nothing but blood and death for years. I have fought all your battles for you, just as you asked me. I have learned all the tricks you said I must learn. I have learned not to cry when I strangle a man. I have learned to lay my finger aside my nose and disappear. I have learned to watch everything die. I am not a little girl anymore, dazzled by your magic. It is my magic, now, too. And if I have watched all my soldiers die in front of me, if I have only been saved by my rifle and my own hands, if I have drunk more blood than water for weeks, then I take the human boy who stumbled into my tent and hold him between my legs until I stop screaming, you will not punish me for it. Are we not chyerti? Are we not devils? I will not even hear your punishment, old man.”

Atta girl! Suka deh sama heroine yang ‘wicked’ kayagini. Jika selama ini dia sudah bersusah payah dan melewati berbagai penderitaan untuk menjadi istri Koschei, maka Koschei juga harus mengalami hal yang sama untuk ‘pantas’ mendapatkan Marya ;

“There is no need for you to speak, Kostya. There is only one question: Who is to rule? And that is never answered with words. You will not move. You will not try to loosen my knots. You will suffer for me, as I suffered for you. Then I will know that your submission to me is total, and true. That you are worthy of me.” Marya Morevna took Koschei’s face in her hands and pressed her forehead to his. “We are going to do something extraordinary together, you and I,” she whispered. “Do you remember when you said that to me, so long ago? Do you know what it is we are doing? I will tell you, so that later, you cannot say I deceived you. I am taking my will out of you, and I am taking yours with it. Out of the eye of a needle, hidden inside an egg, hidden inside a hen, hidden inside a goose, hidden inside a deer. When we are finished you will give your will to me, and I will keep it safe for you.” She smiled, her eyes serenely shut. “I learned very well how to give up my will to my lover. I was a savant, you might say. You, however, are a novice. Less than a novice. And, like a good novice, you must swallow your pride.”

Tjuih!. Sebenarnya Ivan tidak bersalah. Dia tidak bisa melawan takdirnya. Setiap Ivan memang diciptakan untuk mencuri istri Koschei. Tapi Ivan sangat normal, SANGAT MEMBOSANKAN.

Mungkin setiap pet-name berbeda arti seperti -chan, -kun, dll. Misal Marya dipanggil Masha, Mashenka. Awalnya cukup membingungkan
  • Menurut saya endingnya agak antiklimaks

The Golem and the Jinni

Bonus : untuk menambah keabsurd-an buku ini, deskripsi Viy – Tsar of Death :
And someone stood in the room who had not stood there before. The man’s black hair fell all the way to the floor. He wore a grey priest’s cassock, and his chest glowed with a splatter of silver light, like a star. His eyelids were so long that they covered his body like a priest’s stole, their lashes brushing the floor. He held out his hands, stretching his long, colorless fingers toward them.

Kelopak mata panjang kiopo iki
